Evaluation

Evaluation

The project theme this term was Gothic horror, I love horror so I was really excited to start. Having to choose and read a book was a good start to the project and I was really pleased with the book I had chosen and character I had picked (The strange case of Jekyll and Hyde, Jekyll and Hyde). I have also really enjoyed creating characters based on one of my favourite TV Series (American Horror Story).I loved learning special effects techniques and can’t wait to start this next year. Creating cuts/ burns/ wounds and old age skin was really interesting to learn and I feel a lot more confident going into next year knowing how to create little bits already. I have experienced what it would be like to create a continuity make-up, this is something I have never done before, I was really nervous about this as it was something new. This will help me a lot in the future as I want to be working behind film/TV and continuity is really important. I want to develop my overall special effects skills and would like to learn a lot more about creating wounds and using prosthetics. Looking at different make-up artists and how they have developed their skills over the years motivates me, especially   Ve Neill she has worked on so many big films, like Pirates of the Caribbean, Hunger Games, Thor, Sweeney Todd, The Grinch and many more. As she has worked on many different films I look into the make-up and try and find how she creates the make-up and what she uses for it. She has also won a lot of different awards; I aim to be as inspirational as she is to me some day. I enjoyed creating the wounds; I found it difficult blending the edges of the latex out to make it look realistic. I really enjoyed colour matching to the skin but I also think these are areas I need to work on. What I think was the most successful part of my project was the continuity make-up not only did I really enjoy doing it, I think I done really well at recreating the look. When creating the continuity make-up it was hard to decide to use the latex to create the old age look or go will just using shadows to create the wrinkles. I found it a problem choosing which to do but I had chosen to go with using the shadows as I believed this would be a better option for continuity as latex is sometimes unpredictable and I was not very confident using it. I also think my TV Series character Quentin’s images weren't what I wanted them to appear like as the scar I created using collodion was shiny in the images from the lights flashing off it. It affected my final images which I was hoping would turn out good but as it was shiny looking it didn't look realistic. I have learnt from this mistake to use translucent powder over the scar when doing anything like this again. I would make sure I time managed myself as I have not been very organized with my first year. I need to learn to manage my projects better for next year as I don’t want to be behind or stressed getting everything finished right at the end. I also think it is important to do more than one shoot for your final projects, if I had done this for my last project I would have realized my mistakes and had time to correct and re shoot them. Overall I have really enjoyed this year I am quite sad it over so quick but I am also really excited to start a new year doing something I know I will love.

My final look for American Horror Story- Conven: Claudia

My final look for American Horror Story- Conven: Quentin

Image of them both together

I really enjoyed doing the make-up for this project and also taking the images. The make-up came out just as I wanted it which I am really happy about. If I could change anything I would have looked into detail on the camera especially at Quentin as looking at the images now everything is how I wanted it except for the scar on his chest as the lights are bouncing off the collodion as it is shiny, I would add translucent powder over the top of the scar to top the shine showing but I hadn't realised this during the shoot. Other than that I think it links in well with the American Horror Story Conven. Altogether I have learnt a lot this year and still learning as I have learnt a good lesson here and it is also a good idea to do more than one shoot in the future to check if you want to change anything about the make-up or the lighting.

Quentin Face chart/ Hair chart

Quentin Face charts/ Hair Charts

I am portraying Quentin as a Frankenstein mixed body part type. He will have scars and be dead looking. Have sweaty skin bags under eyes and red eyes. I am creating a scar on his neck where his head has been attached to a different body. The word I am choosing to inspire me on this look is 'Awakening' as I wanted to make him look like he has been awakened from his grave by Claudia. Quentins hair will be messy and sooty looking.

Claudia's Make-up will be perfect, she will have maroon eye makeup with sharp eyeliner, she will have dark lips and look beautiful. Shes a witch so she has to have a essence of evil about her, so her makeup will be heavy and look dark. She will be wearing all black and be assesoriesed with a black floppy hat and black neck collar. I want to get a black veil and try different posses with that over her face also to get some goo shots. Her hair will be pin straight.

Quentins character

Quentin

Brief
Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don’t live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can’t get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. Sometimes he will be a David Beckham looking guy, whilst in another scene he will appear as a Pete Docherty type, Daniel Craig type or a Hollyoaks Babe. If she is having a bad day he will morph into an uncouth couch potato chav with all that brings with it.

He is as into the horror film genre as she and into role-playing to suit her whims and moods.

Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and keeps him firmly under her thumb, sometimes restraining him or keeping him prisoner in one of the rooms.

Going from the brief I have came up with a few ideas how to place this character into American Horror Story: Conven

Quentin is a figure of Claudia’s imagination, his body changes with her mood. His body is full of scars where the parts change, if she see's him as a couch potato his body will change and he will have fat body parts, if she is having a good day he will look like a normal boy but still with the scars. I will be having Quentin looking like he has been pulled from the grave and has dark circles under his eyes and messy hair as she always keeps him a prisoner as she believes he will cheat on her.

I want Quentin to have a deathly look about him as he was brought back to life by Claudia (so she believes). He will have a scar around his neck and down his chest, he will also have one around his wrists. His hair will be messed up without a style.

I have chosen the word awakening for Quentin, as Claudia thinks she has brought him back to life and he is now hers he will be shown as if he has awakened from death.

The look I want to go for with the outfit is a black jacket without a top underneath as I want to be able to see the scars underneath. This is the sort of image I am trying to go for but not a sexy looking, it was hard to find an exact image to something I wanted but this is something similar with a back jacket and bare underneath.

Claudia's character

Claudia's Character

The Brief

Claudia is a girl in her twenties. As a child she was left alone to develop with little parental guidance and through her relationship with T.V. movies developed an unhealthy relationship with Horror films, believing this to be the way life really is.

All the scenes take place in various parts of Claudia’s apartment, which is European in style with
a great deal of kitsch décor. She is agoraphobic and is kept in touch with the outside world by her neighbours who provide her with her every day requirements.  She models herself on a variety of girls often twisting her look to suit whichever film she is watching at the time and there is often
a nod to the main character in the current film within her appearance.

The script portrays her as psychotic and there is always the feeling that although her character is scripted/can be seen as humorous, danger is just around the corner.   However all this is normal to Claudia and she is of a cheerful disposition in this mad world of hers.

Going from the brief I have came up with a few ideas how to place this character into American Horror Story: Conven

Claudia has had to raise herself so she has no concept of the outside world from her apartment.  Witches are becoming extinct so she hides herself away, she is very beautiful  with long brown/ blond hair  and it always has a beautiful wave to it . She always wears black and wears black hats to hide away. Her personality changes, she can be shy, angry, confident, sad, happy and more depending when her mood changes. She has an imaginary boyfriend Quentin,  who changes with her moods.

I am wanting a darkness about the image, I will be doing cranberry colour and darks on the eyes, waves in the hair.

For the outfit Claudia will be in all black clothing as in the show AHS, as all the witches wear black clothing. I am adding a black floppy hat as an accessory with a veil attached to the side of it, which will link in with the word 'veiled'.

I have chosen the word veiled for Claudia as I think this would suit her character well, she is very insecure and hardly leaves the house because of it. I have added a veil into look which she uses to hide away if she does go out into the world. As her species (witch) is becoming extinct she is nervous people will realise what she is and want to kill her.

American Horror Story: Conven

American Horror Story: Conven

"American Horror Story: Coven lacks any significant or meaningful deaths, marring any true sense of horror or foreboding that previous seasons have utilised to a far greater extent".
Season 3 isn't as horrified as the other seasons, this season has deaths but its nothing if they get brought back to life comparing to the other horrific scenes in different seasons.
" Interestingly enough, the show, which debuted in early October on FX, ranked highest of all FX series premiers in women ages 18-49." Other than it being less of a horror, I really enjoyed this season having most of the main characters women who had power. It is really different to women being seen in horror. I think this is why this season was appealing to a lot of women.

This season has some historically significance which is an interesting fact I learnt, one of the characters Madam LaLaurie is based on a really socialite/serial killer from 1834, this season shows the character as a racist and looking for immortality and she gets what she is given but its all not what she expects.

This is my favourite season as the women are shown as strong main roles in this horror series where normally it would be the women scared and frightened. It has gave me some interesting ideas for my final looks and I can't wait to start.

Up to now they have Five seasons and are expecting another season soon. In order of seasons it starts with:

They all have their unique plot twists and graphic scenes and some have been based on true stories but have been manipulated. American Horror story styled hair

American Horror Story Styled Hair

Today I have concentrated on creating an American Horror Hair style, doing Moira of the first season of the show. Her hair is nicely styled, curled and pinned.

Tools needed: Heated Rollers, sectioning comb, brush, grips, sectioning clips and hairspray

[1]

Step 1
Brush all of the hair making sure you are getting rid of any tangles
Step 2
Create a neat side parting at the front of the hair
Step 3
Starting at the front use the larger size of the  heated rollers, starting from the parting and applying  the heated rollers side ways on the shorter side, making sure the roller goes under the hair and is tight enough and a reasonable amount of section into the roller. (3 red rollers fitted on this side)
Step 4
Apply the rollers on the other side of the parting in the same way (5 red rollers fitted here)
Step 5
Now use the medium size heated rollers, behind the bigger ones and apply them facing forward, and in a brick work set. Do this until half way down the head. (6 blue rollers fitted here)
Step 6
Now use the small size heated rollers, making sure the roller goes over the hair and curls.( 7 white rollers fitted here)

Pictures of the heated rollers layout are below
Step by Step continues after the images

LEAVE ROLLERS IS FOR A WHILE (10-15 MINS)

Image of what the hair looks like after taking the rollers out

Step 7
Section the front of the hair off and clip it away
Step 8
Using the bottom of the hair start to curl it under and round, do it separately into 3 big rolls and firmly grip. Start gathering them together with the pointy end of the comb and pin them together so there are no gaps
Step 9
Now using the front section, keep the side parting, start creating curled textures into the hair and firmly pin them.
Step 10
Use Hairspray all over the hair and smooth the wispy hair down.

I'm not really that confident with doing hair, but I think I am getting more confident and better at styling the hair. Creating different hairstyles and learning new skills on this course is showing and helping with different techniques. I enjoyed today doing this hairstyle and think I could re-create it and do it better. I need to improve on hiding the grips, they are all hidden in this hairstyle but that's after me finishing the style and then spending time going over and re-inserting them to hid them.

I am really happy with the outcome of the make-up, but I am nervous in have to re create it, I have all my notes and have took loads of close up images to create things like the wrinkles and the hair. I really enjoyed working with Ross he is a good model and perfect for my character, I liked creating this make-up as more of a dramatic theatre look. I disliked using the spray, its a really good product but messy and hard to get it into the place you want with out it going onto the skin, I hadn't realised that Ross couldn't take his ear piercings out so I thought this has ruined the old age overall look, but their is nothing anyone could have done at the time, I should have got a different model but I realised last minute and Ross was still perfect for my character. I had a slip up when applying the black color spray to the eyebrows as it smudged onto the skin slightly, but I just wiped it away and corrected the foundation above the brow. I have learned so much about continuity that I didn't know about before, it is always good to take loads of pictures of the make-up to refer back to and writing down notes. Keeping make-up more simplistic but still effective is a good thing for continuity, I mostly need to work on making my make-ups more simple and not going to theatrical with them and making them look more realistic.

I was so nervous recreating this make-up, especially the hair. I enjoyed doing the make-up as always but trying to get it the exact same was tricky, especially the wrinkles. I disliked doing the hair again as it was hard getting it in the same structure and shape, you can tell in the pictures that the hair is not that similar but it doesn't seem as noticeable to people I have shown.I had the exact same problem as the first make-up with getting the black color spray on the skin above the eyebrow, but I corrected it in the same way (by accident and not continuity purpose). I have learned it is hard to create the same make-up when its as dramatic as mine, what I have said before about keeping it simple but effective is what I will keep in mind for next time I do continuity make-up as if its not the same it would effect the look on screen.
